Corporate Work Study Program (CWS)

De La Salle North Catholic High School, founded in 2001, has enlisted the support of over 90 Corporate Partners in the Portland Metropolitan Area. The Corporate Work Study program (CWS) is an integral part of the De La Salle North Catholic education. Students fill entry-level office positions in banking, law, healthcare, finance, architecture, engineering, and many other exciting career fields. The CWS experience provides a tremendous opportunity for underserved students to get a college-prep education and solid professional skills, while at the same time providing a diverse, motivated, enthusiastic entry-level workforce for our Corporate Partners.

What is the Corporate Work Study Program (CWS)?

Partner organizations contract with CWS to fill full-time, entry-level jobs. The fee-for-service contractual period spans approximately nine months from September to the second week in June. These jobs are paid positions, with the money earned paid directly to De La Salle North Catholic to cover approximately 50% of the student’s cost of education. Students are employees of DLSNC not of the Corporate Partners.

CWS staff members provide customer support to our Corporate Partner’s supervisors in addition to handling all payroll, W-4, I-9, workers’ compensation, and other employer issues for the students. CWS trains the students, provides transportation, and works with hiring organizations to assign motivated, enthusiastic student workers who can best meet the Corporate Partners' business needs!

FAQ's for Corporate Partners

Yes. De La Salle North Catholic High School’s Corporate Work Study program (CWS) trains students in areas that include:

  • Basic computer skills and Microsoft Word & Excel
  • Customer service skills
  • Standard office equipment training
  • Office etiquette
  • Dress for success
  • Positive first impressions in the workplace
  • Phone skills
  • Filing and document processing
  • Confidentiality & ethics in the workplace
  • Workplace safety
  • Team Building

The three biggest responsibilities are:

  • Provide a positive working environment for the student
  • Provide a supervisor(s) who believes in the program and the success of De La Salle North Catholic  students
  • Provide meaningful work for the students and explain to them the importance of their role

If there ever is an issue with a student at the workplace, we recommend you deal with that student directly as you would any employee. You also can notify your coordinator in the CWS Office for support.

There are many reasons to participate:

  • Be part of an innovative solution to the daunting education challenges that our society faces
  • Enhance diversity, drive productivity, and reduce employee “burnout” from repetitive clerical assignments, by filling entry-level jobs with capable, enthusiastic young people
  • Reduce costs--outsourcing a job to DLSNC costs less than hiring a single full-time employee
  • Use a reliable staffing alternative--CWS provides transportation, screening, support, and training
  • Generate higher job satisfaction--people appreciate making a difference in the lives of others and value working for a company that supports helping others, especially those who will be Portland's future
  • Groom members of our future workforce--create relationships with a diverse student population that may become employees, clients, suppliers, and friends
  • Provide greater potential for keeping a highly educated, productive workforce in Oregon after college
  • Generates community awareness and stability by creating productive futures for the underserved youth of the Portland metropolitan area
  • Work with a “turn-key” program that operates in a business-like fashion, making participation easy

Every student will receive a grade and one academic credit for the Corporate Work Study program. CWS staff members monitor student performance through daily time cards that students and supervisors complete. Every student is evaluated on his/her performance twice during the school year.  Although it rarely happens, students can be replaced if there are any serious issues or if work performance does not meet expectations.

This is a very common question--you are not alone!  A CWS staff member is assigned as your corporate relations coordinator to work with you to navigate any issues that arise. They are always available to work with you in sharing tips for nervous supervisors and resolving any challenges. All supervisors are strongly encouraged to attend a morning of orientation at the DLSNC campus prior to the start of the school year. In addition, support resources and best practices events are available to your staff during the school year.

We Work To Fit Your Needs

Common Job Sharing: a team of four students is hired to fill a 1.0 FTE entry-level position within one specific department of a business or organization. As a result, each student on this team has the same job description and will perform the same tasks on each of their workdays every week.

Flexible Job Sharing: if a Corporate Partner's needs are in several departments on a part-time basis, flexible job sharing allows our Partners to place one student in up to four different departments one day each week. For example, Ana could work every Monday in HR while Jose works every Tuesday in Finance and Maria every Wednesday in Marketing, etc.

Remote Workspace Available: If a Corporate Partner is unable to host a team in person, whether temporarily or long-term, students can work in the CWS Work Suite on the DLSNC campus, interacting with their supervisors virtually. The CWS Work Suite is monitored by CWS Staff, and extensive security measures are taken to protect any property of a Corporate Partner that its team uses.

We realize that the success of our partnerships depends on our Corporate Partner's comfort level with the CWS program. Thus we try to go above and beyond to ensure that Corporate Partners feel informed, supported, and appreciated.

The Corporate Work Study Program positions students for a brighter, more hopeful future by enabling them to develop self-confidence, build self-esteem, and develop lifelong relationships with mentors in the community.
