The mission of the College Counseling department is to create a college-going school culture in addition to having students apply to the best-fit college for them based on academic performance, affordability, and long-term career goals.

We work towards this mission by providing individual and family meetings in addition to in-class instruction on college admissions issues, such as entrance examinations (PSAT/SAT), financial aid, and scholarships, preparation for college, and the college application process. In addition, college and university admissions officers from around the country visit campus to provide information about their institutions.

Curriculum

In collaboration with the School Counselors, the College Counselor provides in-class instruction and career assessments to begin an ongoing conversation about college attendance with all 9th, 10th, and 11th graders.

All 12th graders enroll in College Readiness during their Fall semester. The College Readiness course focuses on preparing students for post-secondary education. Students explore what it means to be college ready and thoroughly plan and prepare for life after high school. The main goals of the College Readiness course are: to provide students with the tools needed to identify, apply and enroll in a best-fit college/university; to identify and apply for financial aid; and to learn the necessary skills to be successful in college. We utilize Naviance Student, which is a career/college planning software program. Through this course, students also meet and engage with admissions representatives from various colleges/universities.

Support to Make College Affordable

The college counselor meets one-on-one with students regarding scholarship opportunities. Together, they discuss how to discover and apply for scholarships appropriate to the student's needs, strengths, and goals. College scholarships commonly applied for by DLSNC students are QuestBridge National Match, Renaissance Foundation, Jordan Wings, Ford Family Foundation, Skanner Foundation, as well as countless institution-specific scholarships.

The Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) is required to be submitted in order for students to be eligible not only for federal financial aid but also for aid from individual schools and various scholarship programs. Completing the FAFSA is a graduation requirement to help our students access the maximum amount of financial aid so as to make attending college more affordable for them and their families. Visit the Federal Student Aid Office of the Department of Education to fill out your FAFSA form.
