College Counseling

The mission of the College Counseling & Alumni Advising Department is to build a college-going culture at De La Salle North Catholic High School and to accompany students from their first year of high school through college graduation. The department pairs individual and family meetings with in-class instruction on the college admissions process and extends that support beyond graduation so that our college-bound mission results in a college-graduated outcome for our alumni.

This is carried out through two connected functions:

  • College Counseling: guiding current students in grades 9 through 12 through testing, college list development, applications, financial aid, and scholarships.
  • Alumni Advising: supporting graduates once they leave DLSNC, monitoring persistence and completion, and connecting them to campus resources through degree completion.

Curriculum

In collaboration with the School Counselor, the Director of College Counseling & Alumni Advising provides in-class instruction and career assessments to initiate ongoing conversations about college attendance with all 9th, 10th, and 11th graders.

All 12th graders enroll in College Readiness during their Fall semester. The College Readiness course focuses on preparing students for post-secondary education. Students explore what it means to be college-ready and thoroughly plan and prepare for life after high school. The main goals of this course are: to provide students with the tools needed to identify, apply, and enroll in a best-fit college/university; to identify and apply for financial aid; and to learn the necessary skills to be successful in college. We utilize SCOIR, which is a career/college planning software program. Through this course, students also meet and engage with admissions representatives from various colleges/universities.

Support to Make College Affordable

The Director of College Counseling & Alumni Advising meets one-on-one with students regarding scholarship opportunities. Together, they discuss how to discover and apply for scholarships appropriate to the student's needs, strengths, and goals. College scholarships commonly applied for by DLSNC students are QuestBridge National Match, Renaissance Foundation, Jordan Wings, Ford Family Foundation, as well as countless institution-specific scholarships.

The Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) is required to be submitted in order for students to be eligible not only for federal financial aid but also for aid from individual schools and various scholarship programs. Completing the FAFSA is a graduation requirement to help our students access the maximum amount of financial aid so as to make attending college more affordable for them and their families. Alumni Advising

Within her role as College Success Specialist, Ms. Lexi Williams supports and walks alongside DLSNC alumni as they navigate the transition to college. The goal of our Alumni Advising program is to work closely with our alumni throughout their college journey with a wide range of support, including navigating ongoing financial aid requirements, finding their place on campus, academic support, and employment and internship opportunities. We utilize GradForce, an alumni data tracking system where we log alumni interactions, college enrollments, and pull trends from previous years in one centralized location.

Each university partner commits to meeting a minimum of 85% of a student’s demonstrated need in addition to offering support resources throughout their time in college. Students who attend a University Partner show a 32% increase in their Bachelor’s Degree attainment rate when compared to the national average.
